The effects artist said Marvel must stop believing “VFX gives [it] infinite room to change things.” They said Marvel must work with its directors to reduce the number of iterations in the VFX process. “With training — with clearer, more ‘decisive’ visualization provided to directors early in the process — everyone could be on the same page.” It’s not just the hydrofoil that makes this boat different from a regular powerboat. Candela also changed the design of its motor maritime — taking the traditional gas motor off the back of the boat and replacing it with a highly efficient direct-drive motor, known as the C-Pod, which sits below the hull and powers through the water like a torpedo. Maeve finds Chalores about to transcend — a drone host holding a whirring device near her head.
Chalores grabs the device and she and Maeve battle it out. They tumble outside and continue to fight in shallow water. Then Maeve is shot in the head by host William. Next, the host turns on his creator, offering just a few words before also shooting Chalores in the head. Swedish company Candela wants to totally rethink the world of luxury leisure boats. No fossil fuels, no noisy motors, no bouncing up and down on waves. In fact, when you get up to speed in the company’s latest leisure Boat ride, you’re not sailing on the water at all — you’re flying above it.
With Starlink, SpaceX expanded into internet service, initially offering a home setup starting at $600 for hardware and setup fees, then charging $99 per month for service. Starlink also began offering internet for RVs earlier this year. SpaceX, the company helmed by Elon Musk, Boat training announced a new effort Thursday called Starlink Maritime. As the name suggests, it’s a version of the company’s well-regarded Starlink satellite internet service, now for boats.
SpaceX said the technology will offer high-speed, low-latency internet of up to 350 Mbps download, which is better than many broadband internet connections on land. Even after shots are exhaustively delivered, Marvel is allegedly “infamous” for requesting “tons of different variations” until one earns the green light. It doesn’t end there. More changes to a production often come late in the game, potentially weeks out from release, resulting in an endemic practice of working overtime.
The latest Doctor Strange flick, for example, underwent late changes to sequences involving VFX. When you dream of owning a boat, it’s easy to get swept up in the majesty of sailing the open waters. What’s been less clear is how you’ll upload TikToks and Instagram pics to make all your friends jealous — until now. The service will cost $10,000 upfront for the hardware, and then pay-as-you-go at $5,000 per month. That may seem steep, but if you own a boat it’s probably a steal.
Which is probably why Musk, the world’s richest person, was so excited to announce it. “You bid on a number of shots and hope that on average they don’t end up being too complicated or difficult, or that the client gets too caught up in minor details and keeps sending shots back for more work,” said Peter Allen, an animator and VFX artist and former lecturer in film and television production at the University of Melbourne.
